Meet Emma Winklejohn

Summer 2020 Environmental Intern – Environmental Sciences

Emma graduated Spring 2020 from the Indiana University (IU) O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs with a degree in Environmental & Sustainability Studies and a minor in Geography where she mainly focused on GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and RS (Remote Sensing). Growing up she wanted to pursue a career where she could work outdoors which is how she came to find Environmental Sustainability. Her interest in Metric stemmed from the company being a minority-owned business and having a diverse workforce. During her time at IU, her studies were concentrated in Environmental Justice and Ethics and focused on Environmental Policy regarding endangered species. She was happy to learn that Metric often works with the Indiana Bat which is a state and federally endangered species.

Working at Metric
Emma was excited to get out into her element for her first on-site experience and enjoy the outdoors. She realized how alike fieldwork was to working general labor jobs. Working in Disaster Clean-Up in the past, she was able to quickly familiarize herself with the tools and protocols used when on-site. Similar to other Metric interns, she has improved her plant identification skills and agrees that tall wetland boots or waders are a must-have. She already has experienced soaked shoes.

Working from home has proven tough for Emma because she enjoys working with others and being active. She admits that staying virtually connected at Metric has been great. Like her peers, Emma is familiarizing herself and putting into practice GIS mapping while working at home.

Fun-fact about Emma: she lives with two cats, one named Lt. Dan as he only has 3 legs and Stevie, who wakes her up every morning to play fetch!

This summer our interns have risen to the challenge with not only new experiences, but new working styles due to COVID-19. We are proud of their hard work and adaptability while remotely working from home as well as out in the field.

Our Internship Program
