Dunes-Kankakee-Trail

Porter, IndianaMetric Environmental prepared the Categorical Exclusion environmental documentation required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and associated Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) requirements for the proposed road improvements and construction of a multi-use trail (Dunes Kankakee Trail) along the east side of SR 49, adjacent north of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) bridge to the gatehouse monuments at the Indiana Dunes State Park entrance in Porter County, Indiana.

The 10 ft. wide asphalt trail extended 0.73 mile to establish a safe off-set for pedestrian and non-motorized transportation and recreation joining the network of existing trails within the community. In addition, the project included asphalt overlay along SR 49, reconstruction of the existing median south of the gatehouse monuments, construction of a 5 ft. wide landscaped median, construction of two trailheads along the east side of SR 49, modifications to approximately 100 ft. of the existing bicycle lanes, and elimination of a south-bound vehicular travel lane on SR 49.

Metric Environmental’s scope of work included a Red Flag Investigation, site visit, coordination with federal, state and local agencies, oversight of the Section 106 responsibilities, documentation pertaining to waterways, wetlands, terrestrial habitat, threatened or endangered species, floodplains, land use, Section 4(f), Section 6(f), air quality, noise impacts, community impacts, and hazardous/regulated materials.

The resulting environmental document was reviewed and approved by the INDOT LaPorte District.
