Darin is a junior at Purdue University majoring in Environmental and Ecological Engineering.
What was your first impression of Metric?
I was honestly surprised how big it was. I knew it was a smaller company, but I really thought there were only like 5 people that worked here. There’s actually four times as many!
What has surprised you about working at Metric?
It shouldn’t have come as a shock but keeping track of my hourly time according to the different projects was surprising. Every other job I’ve done, I was doing the same thing the entire shift. At Metric, I’ll work on multiple different projects during a single day, and I have to log my timesheet accordingly.
What do find the most challenging about working at Metric?
Having to get bitten by mosquitos and ticks outside! And learning how to use Arc GIS more extensively, but that’s not too hard.
Why did you decide to go into this field? Who/what influenced this decision?
Aerospace was boring! I like chemistry and biology in environmental engineering. (Environmental) is one of the most important engineering fields because we’ll need more of an emphasis on the environment in the next generations.
What have you learned so far?
I’ve learned a lot of the reasoning behind what Metric does and why. Like the different jobs they do and the different clients they have.
What do you still hope to learn this summer?
I want to learn more about the other departments. I’ve learned a lot about Natural Resources and a tad bit about Assessment Remediation. I haven’t gotten to look into the other departments, other than the NEPA processes that are already involved in Natural Resources.
What was your first job? How did it differ from working at Metric?
I worked in a machine shop with my cousins. I did pipefitting, welding, and I swept a lot. I assembled pipes for boilers. I’m literally a boilermaker! It was much more manual labor than what I’m doing at Metric, even when we go into the field.
What is something that someone might be surprised to learn about you?
I got hit by a jet ski one time! My sister was driving it, and she had to veer out of the way of a speedboat. I was on a jet ski too, and my sister crashed into the side of it. It hit me in the leg, but thankfully all I got was a bruise and a welt.
What’s your favorite food/snack?
I drink too much coffee, that’s for sure. I just really like the way coffee tastes, with or without creamer.
Do you have any hobbies?
I like to watch movies on Netflix, and I go to parks a lot. I like Fort Harrison, Flat Fort Creek, Mud Creek and the Celery Bog.
Do you have any pets?
I have Jason and Zoey, the Boston Terriers, and Julian, the Australian Cattle Dog. I also have Grey, she’s my cat. She lives outside and sometimes she gets bullied by the other cats because she’s not in good shape. I brought a mouse home from my friend two weeks ago, but I had to give it back because it had health issues.

Darin’s parting advice for students looking for internships
I think everyone should know that internships provide useful insight into work environments. Make sure you get as much experience as you can throughout your college career in order to better secure your future prospects. Also, poison ivy has three leaves and if you ever see it, don’t pick it up! It takes a whole week to go away and it gets all over your hands, so be careful around three-leaf plants!
Our Internship Program
Metric’s summer internship program offers structured education, training, and hands-on experience in the environmental consulting field. Our program is designed so that interns receive exposure to multiple service areas. Internships are open to juniors, seniors, recent graduates, or graduate students. Applications for Summer 2020 will be accepted beginning January 1, 2020.
